Gerard Creces wins Huron-Bruce NDP federal nomination

Thirty-four-year-old reporter and musician Gerard Creces has won the nomination and is now the federal New Democratic Party (NDP) Candidate for Huron Bruce in the October election.

Creces ran against Jan Johnstone, long time Bluewater District School Board trustee and former chairperson. Johnstone has also run as a federal and provincial candidate for Huron-Bruce in the past.

Both spoke to an energized and packed hall, Thursday, June 25. The engagement of many younger people in the audience was telling.

It is expected that Creces will bring many youth and millennials to the political conversation. His almost daily social media videos on political issues during the campaign, have engaged a strong following.

Creces is concerned about many issues that affect his and future generations. The environment, good jobs with pensions and benefit plans, and $15-a-day child care, are especially important to him.

But “trade agreements, such as the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement, have got to go” says Creces, “if we want to protect the security of our agricultural industry and local companies.”

He also worries about the legalization of privacy and rights violations in the current Bill C-51 – which was supported by both Liberals and Conservatives. The hidden face of rural poverty and the lack of transportation networks in Huron-Bruce are also concerns, he says.

As a reporter for almost a decade in the riding, Creces brings a wealth of knowledge on current political issues and policies and how they impact on the local community, and has made many key contacts along the way. In his speech, he invited the crowd to reject the current political paradigm and to “take the power back” by voting for him and the grassroots NDP in the upcoming federal election.
